Real Progress

What Happened to September 21?

If you've been tuning in every week, you noticed that there's no page for September 21. Funny thing, when Luann and I were both travelling out of town, the project sort of stopped. Who'da thought that we needed to be here to keep the project moving.

Lesson - An unwatched pot doesn't boil - or simmer along - or even get water in it.

September 28

In contrast to last week, things perked along pretty good this week. Lynn's been planning and planting, Marcos and his crew has been working late into the evening, Able got the stone down in the front and we've got five truck loads of dirt and boulders with plants poking out.

The Stone Arrives The Stone Arrives.

A couple of weeks ago we looked at stone and thought Lompoc stone would be nice.

What did we know.

Lompoc stone was too thick, too rough and just didn't make sense. While we were gone, Lynn, Steve and Abel went down and picked out a more suitable stone.

Abel the Mason Abel inspecting incoming stone.

Luann and Abel hit it right off and the bond of craftsman and appreciative audience was formed.

Able is thoughtful, deliberate and knows his craft. He explained to Luann how he lays out candidates, checks for color, shape and character and forms an image in his mind how the whole thing will look. Then he starts laying the stone.

The New Porch Not a new Porche, but a very nice porch.

The picture doesn't do it justice. Abel transformed the brick and exposed aggregate. The steps became semicircular and the path breaks from the hard lines to a path of interesting shapes. You can't see from this picture but the steps from the street are also faced with stone, a nice look.

Mexican Sage Mexican Sage.

The Mexican Sage that Luann planted in the old brick box was transplanted to a mound along the front and it's doing well. It's a plant that's popular here, the deer don't eat it, it grows well, and provides lots of color.

Path To the Back Yard Path To the Back Yard.

We pulled the side fence forward and now there's a nice path that leads from the front landing to the side yard. Lynn and Marcos saved the juniper and pine tree and the path has mounds and lots of plants along it. It should fill in nicely.

Path to Patio The Path to the Front Patio.

From the front door or the street there's a winding path that leads to where the new patio will be. What used to be junipers and red brick is now mounds or dirt with different colors and scents, a winding path and a resurfaced wall lined with color.

The Path From the Street The Path Viewed from the Street

This view from the street shows the path, the fountain, the trees in the back and where the new patio will go.

Right Side of Driveway The Right Side of the Driveway

The wall's been painted, the rubble's been moved and the plants are starting to go in on the side of the driveway. This shot sows the nice curve inside new wall, the foxglove and garlic in the front and the ferns behind the wall.

This will be the first section to be complete. All that's missing is the drip system and the lights.
